Outer Diameter/Inner Diameter Machining

Machining

All machining processes remove material to form shapes. The differences between processes come from the relative motion between the cutting tool, the work piece and the type of cutting tool used. The overall cutting speed of the tool is usually dictated by the type of material being machined, generally the harder the material the slower the machining time will be.

NSA offers a range of machining capabilities (in reference to shafting):

  • Semi finished – preparing the bar per customer specifications (for example: complete outer diameter work) to enable faster and easier final completion after customer’s receipt of material.
  • Finished – machined complete in accordance with the customer’s drawings and specifications.

Gundrilling

Gundrilling was first used over 100 years ago in the making of gun barrels. Today’s technologies have made it the most commonly used method of making deep holes of small diameter and is the most accurate process in relation to the hole size. With a gundrill, the workpiece can be placed in a different position for each hole, making production of several holes arrayed around the center of a circular piece possible. Each hole can even be a different size providing more flexibility. Unfortunately, this process does have its limitations, as inner diameters get larger or the workpieces get longer, gundrilling becomes prohibitive both in time of completion and accuracy.

NSA’s gundrilling capabilities:

  • .078” to 1.500” on center and off center
  • up to 120” long
  • (+.005”/-.005”) with 125 RMS
  • .003 drift per inch

Boring

Boring is the process of drilling a hole into a solid bar with no intention of re-using the waste material. There is no core leftover like there is in trepanning.

NSA’s boring capabilities:

  • .950” to 7.250” on center and off center
  • up to 236” long
  • (+.015”/-.015”) with 125 RMS
  • .002 drift per inch

Honing

Honing is a productive manufacturing process used to improve the bore geometry and surface texture of holes in workpieces. It is the metal removal used after casting, drilling or boring.

NSA’s honing capabilities:

  • .950” to 7.250” on center and off center
  • up to 236” long
  • (+.015”/-.015”) with 125 RMS
  • .002 drift per inch

Trepanning

Trepanning is a type of boring where a ring-like cut is made into a solid material with the coincided formation of a solid cylinder. Creating two separate pieces from one solid, the first is your desired shape and the second is the leftover core.

NSA’s trepanning capabilities:

  • 1.750” to 9.000” on center and off center
  • Up to 200”
  • (+.030”/-.030”) with 250 RMS
  • .002 drift per inch
