Stainless steel, in its simplest form, is a ferrous alloy with a chromium content. Usually, stainless steel contains more than 50% iron and a minimum of 11% chromium.

Benefits of Stainless Steel
The high oxidation resistance of stainless steel is attained with the addition of more than 12% chromium. The chromium establishes a layer of chromium oxide film on the material when it is exposed to oxygen. The layer of chromium oxide is not visible – this is what keeps stainless steel shiny. The film is also impermeable to water and air, which protects the metal underneath. Even if the surface of the material is scratched, the chromium oxide layer rapidly reforms. Other elements can be added in the production of stainless steel such as aluminum, nickel, tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, silicon, copper, and nitrogen. There are three factors generally used to choose a grade of stainless steel for a specific application such as mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and physical properties.
