What are the Differences between Soldering, Brazing and Welding Stainless Steel?

Welding stainless steel is only one method of producing stainless steel tubes.

I do not suggest for you to solder or weld steel tubing on your own.  It can be a dangerous process if not implemented correctly.  My advice is to leave it to a professional.  Your steel supplier or manufacturer can handle this job for you.  But this does not stop clients from asking about the availability of the various techniques; thus, am here to share with you the distinction between soldering, brazing and welding steel.

What is Soldering?

Soldering is a process that fuses two or more metals together by connecting the melting of a metal between them.  The melting metal is referred to as the solder.  When soldering stainless steel, the manufacturer can choose to solder two stainless steel pieces together rather than use a different material known as the filler metal.

There are companies that use soldering and brazing practices but do not confuse the two. They both use heat but the temperature used in each method is distinct.  Soldering is connecting the metals below 800 degrees Fahrenheit while brazing is above 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is Welding?

Welding is when you take two pieces of metal, heat them up until you reach the melting point then gum the tubes together at the joints.   Most experienced, knowledgeable and trained professionals recommend using electric power when welding stainless steel tubing.   There are a wide array of power sources to choose from such as constant voltage, AC, DC reverse polarity and more.
