Be smart like the London Olympics 2012 Committee by choosing stainless steel for your next project.

The London Olympics Committee for 2012 put into thought the roles types of steel would play in the creation for venues and public areas for the Olympic Games.  The main material chosen had to exhibit environmentally safe traits.  The Committee also took into consideration the concern the growing impact the selected metal would have on the land, nature and the people around it.  The Committee chose stainless steel for a wide array of reasons including it being a 100% recyclable metal.

Today I am going to share with you an insight of why stainless steel was chosen for the Olympics and why it is the right choice for your next home and/or business project.

When producing metal for a project much energy goes into the production process.  In the past, manufacturers and engineers wasted an abundant amount of energy on soldering, welding and implementing other techniques to get a selected metal just right.  Steel manufacturers took notice of this excessive energy it emitted so they decided to make a change.  Currently, stainless steel manufacturers evolved this technique and it is now an energy efficient process making it a high quality, cost-effective, energy saving, environmentally safe selection for you.

Why Stainless Steel is the Perfect Sustainable Material Choice for Builders and Architects

Stainless steel is an ideal sustainable material for your next project.

There are many reasons why stainless steel is an ideal choice for architects and engineers.  It is an environmentally friendly material that is visually pleasing, purposeful and adaptable to various industries, sizes and shapes.  Modern design seems to be relying upon it more than traditional materials for these reasons.  It can display different details and architectural looks while still delivering high quality, durable and corrosion-resistant traits.

2 Advantages to Choosing Stainless Steel

Reusable

If someone must tear down the material and rebuild over it without saving a building and/or project then the architect does not fret about the affects it has on the environment.  Stainless steel can be dissolved using specific methods.  Once this is completed, the material can be reused, reduced and recycled into something new ensuring the metal is not wasted or left to remain without purpose polluting the land.

Conserves Energy

Some building materials need to be treated before it is able to conserve energy.  For instance, if you do not use stainless steel material to transfer and preserve the coolness of an air conditioning then the results can be unpredictable.  Save yourself the headache.  Stainless steel comes with a highly solar reflective index value that does not need to be applied and reapplied.  It is a characteristic embedded into the metal meaning you do not have to waste time, money and material on reapplying and replacing it to ensure energy conservation.

The Radisson Blu in Stockholm is the result of using stainless steel to highlight the environment.

The first use of the word “green” was utilized when referring to environmental movements from the 1970s.  It was a coined word that the masses thought stereotypical tree hugger organizations only used.  Well, the stereotype was not quite accurate for the environmental organizations were focused on improving the environment for all.  It wasn’t always a fabricated hippie-filled group, as some conservatives suggested.  There were environmentally driven organizations consisting of businessmen, politicians, families, community leaders and more.  And what the masses began to take note of was the word “green.” It was becoming a common word used outside of this specific realm.

Commercial and residential industries began to dabble in environmental research trying to find new ways to incorporate available products and services that co-exist in the world without damaging our surroundings.  Through this process the discovery of using stainless steel for “going green” was created.  Today, building designers, engineers and architects are choosing steel as the material of choice for their own projects.

Why Choose Steel?

Steel is an environmentally safe material.  It is able to remain sustainable without taking a toll on the setting around you.  This means it is able to contribute to the style and aesthetic aspect of a building while not losing any of its energy efficient and environmentally driven attributes.  For instance, when a building is destroyed in order to create a new one then the negative impact the demolition has on the environment decreases significantly when using this metal.

One hotel that exemplifies the use of stainless steel enhancing the beautiful natural setting is the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in Stockholm Sweden.  This hotel is composed of 13 miles of translucent stainless steel rods.  They are a artistic interpretation of the sky and water.  These specific rods alter the skyline significantly and when looked at you may see a “reminiscence of the Nordic Light,” as stated by the architect himself Hans Forsmark.

New York City and Steel Go Together

Stainless steel is the metal of choice in New York City.

When I roam around New York City I look up, just like any other tourist.  The locals say don’t do it but how can you not.  The magnificent building structures are impossible to ignore.  Architects manipulated steel in such a manner that architectural masterpieces were created throughout the city.  So I decided to dive into stainless steel more and find out how it is made and other attributes about this strong, resilient material.

One of the most noticeable buildings in New York City is the Empire State Building.  It was first incepted by architects who were set on designing the tallest building in New York City.  But they were puzzled on how to make a structure so tall with the heavy metals used in the past, such as iron.  So they did some tests and eventually concluded that a lighter, stronger material has to be used to complete this spectacular building.  Thus, they chose steel.

What is Stainless Steel Fabrication?

The way steel is bent and cut to create any shape, size, structure is referred to as stainless steel fabrication. The metal is lightweight while still being strong, and resistant to corrosion making it the building designers’ top choice.

Stainless Steel versus Carbon Steel

This preferred metal is commonly used in building bridges, oil rigs, and water pumps.  It is able to withstand many different extreme temperatures without faltering.  It is resistant to corrosion, rust and chips keeping repair and replacement costs to a minimum.  All of these traits make steel a much better choice than carbon steel.  For carbon steel is susceptible to rust and corrosion when exposed to air and water.

With Fantasy Football winding down and the NFL Playoffs coming up then there is one thing this country has on the brain, Super Bowl XLVI.  Gearing up for the big game includes more than buying chips and dips for your football guests.  It is about studying the disabled list and learning more about the venue, Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts.

Lucas Oil Stadium was built in preparation for Super Bowl 2012 but the architects took it one step further and made sure this venue would continue to be utilized during the off-season.  It has many unusual features establishing this stadium as a multi-functional venue.  Let’s start by looking at the retractable roof and the steel trusses supporting the 760 feet long structure.

Steel was the best and only choice of material strong enough to make the trusses needed to hold the weight of the two retractable panels that create the roof.  The total weight is around 2.5 million pounds; thus, the architects needed a durable, strong, weather resistant material.  Anything other than steel would collapse under such pressure.

The retractable roof separates itself from other stadiums.  This was the first retractable roof in history to divide lengthwise.  It slides down the slope of the stadium roof when it is opened.

Another spectacular feature is the large, moveable window wall.  This is another first for stadiums because it was the largest moveable glass wall in the world.  The purpose it to allow the stadium the option to stay open like playing in an outdoor field or shut keeping the interior protected from negative weather destruction.

Lucas Oil Stadium has also been used to host NCAA basketball tournaments and other events.  The 70,000 plus seating capabilities possible for basketball makes this stadium top contender for the NBA All-Star Game and NBA Finals.

3 Benefits to Using Steel Windows

Posted on November 29, 2011 by Reda Abouleish

steel-stainless-windows-benefits-tips-barsSteel is a material that works with modern or classic building designs.  Architects, builders and designers are choosing steel windows over other materials but why.  What makes steel windows more beneficial than the rest for commercial structures, hospitals, schools and homes?  Here are three advantages to using steel windows.

Steel Windows Last

If you compare aluminum versus steel windows then steel windows are easily the stronger and more durable of the two.  A steel window is approximately three times stronger than aluminum.  It does not crack with age or disintegrate over time.  It produces solid windows able to hold an immense amount of weight and size offering breathtaking outdoor views that may otherwise not exist at all.

High Fire Rating

When a builder is designing a structure he/she must keep in mind the required building codes of fire windows.  In many cases, city codes require fire rated steel windows to be used, especially when related to specific structures. Check with your building codes for details.

How are Fire Windows Rated?

Fire windows are measured by the duration of time it takes to protect a building from flames.  A fire window with a high rating is considered better protection for occupants and those around or near the building.  Steel windows prevent further tragic situations from occurring for steel windows do not break, melt or cause a back draft.  This significantly decreases the danger people and firefighters face during such disasters.

Versatility

As mentioned in the introduction, steel windows can be used for a wide array of styles and looks.  You can go extremely modern or traditional.  It does not matter what route you choose for you are able to customize your orders into whatever form, shape, style needed to complete your design.

stainless-steel-nickel-alloly-bars-benefits-cost-effective

Builders are always thinking of new ways to create sustainable and durable structures.  They are thinking of ways to keep the environment safe while matching the needs of consumers.  Going green is at the forefront of their mind but so is cost.  With the economy in a slump, builders are trying to find cost-effective means to deliver a high quality product without breaking the bank.  A material that assists builders in addressing these concerns is steel.

Resilient

Steel is a material that lasts through the most extreme temperatures and weather.  There is little to no risk of a building falling apart when natural disasters strike.  The steel remains intact providing the client with peace of mind.  Additionally, when choosing stainless steel there is no risk of the material decaying like wood or attracting termites or rodents.  Stainless steel is a solid choice when building different venues, living spaces, office buildings, medical centers, storage areas and more.

Cost Effective

Working with steel decreases your overall costs.  It reduces the amount of subcontractors needed to work on your project.  You do not need roofers, framers and siding contractors.  This keeps your projected completion time on track.  The less people to worry about the better you are at time management.  The delays are minimized ensuring you are not wasting money on unexpected additional time and labor.  This is a significant advantage over other materials.
