An Inside Look at the Stainless Steel “Seven Wonders” in Houston, Texas

Check out the infamous stainless steel structure "Seven Wonders" located in Houston, Texas.

Today is the first day of the Houston Texans season home-opener against the Miami Dolphins.  This is going to be an action-packed game in one of the most culturally diverse and celebrated cities in the United States.  While visiting this busy, entertaining, shopping and restaurant-filled metropolitan area reserve time to enjoy the city parks and public art works including the “Seven Wonders.”

The ‘Seven Wonders” are 70 feet tall stainless steel pillars located in Sesquicentennial Park.  This is designed to highlight the banks of Buffalo Bayou.  At night, these glowing columns reflect the water illuminating the home of Houston’s own internationally-exclaimed opera and ballet companies at the Wortham Center. The entire project was a way to celebrate and remember the 150th birthday of the region while providing a lovely, enchanting piece of work to admire and enjoy for another 150 years to come.

The seven pillars represent different aspects of Houston’s history. The pillars signify the following industries and Houston’s dominants in each field: energy, manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, philanthropy, technology and transportation.  The way the seven columns came about required a unique collaboration between the artist Mel Chin, Guy Hagstette, Ray and Hollington Architects and 1,050 school children born in 1986.

Chin thought of an idea to request school children born the same year as Houston’s sesquicentennial year to submit drawings representing one of the seven fields listed above.  Amongst these drawings, Chin chose 150 drawings to recreate as a laser-cut steel etching placed within each column.

A Closer Look at Stainless Steel Round Bars

Stainless Steel is featured in 2 Prestigious International Hotels

Stainless steel is used in a unique manner at the Miura Hotel by featuring a 30 feet high statue of a man pressing against the property.

There are hotels worldwide that choose to use stainless steel to highlight specific aspects of the structures for interior and external features.  Today I am going to share with you two examples of how stainless steel is used in the utmost highly acclaimed hotels located across the globe.  Let’s start this list with an infamous brand name chain that originated in the USA, Trump International Hotel & Tower®.

Trump seems to own everything.  There is no denying that.  You see him on ads, hosting television shows and his name brand extends to clothing and jewelry lines too but his most prominent founding arena of success stems from his residential and commercial property dealings.

Trump International Hotel & Tower® Chicago is sample of Donald Trump’s legacy and his use of stainless steel for the design and structure of this hotel is remarkable.

Stainless steel and glass adorn this impressive 1,389 feet height hotel.  It has a breathtaking peak that tops out at 1,170 feet.  The stainless steel incorporated in the building is not assigned to one part of the exterior or interior.  It is actually utilized throughout the property.  For instance, there are approximately 45,000 tons of steel bars reinforcing the support of the hotel.  There are bowed, polished stainless steel pieces created to form a division between units of the windows extending beyond 9 inches from the glass line.  Smart applications of this metal are uncovered throughout the property.

Another structure that features stainless steel is the Miura hotel in Czech Republic.   This hotel used the metal in a unique manner by incorporating a 30 feet high stainless steel man pressing against the outside of the hotel.  It is a sculptor created by the artist David Černý who is notorious for his large-scale installations.

What is Stainless Steel?

The History of Stainless Steel Trains

stainless-steel-trains-history-benefitsIn the 1930s, the Depression hit affecting many booming businesses including the automobile business.  The E.G. Budd Company was not immune to this negative downfall.  The company saw a serious decline to its car business; thus, they were left with no choice.  They had to start letting go of many of its employees.  A 10,000 people run factory had to be shut down.  This became a problem for Edward Budd himself.  It was rumored that he was quite disturbed by this tragic outcome.  He didn’t want this to occur so he kept thinking about a new endeavor to reclaim the profits and jobs lost from his automobile business.

At this time in history, Budd also learned about stainless steel.  The dome of the Chrysler Building just finished and he was in awe of the shiny material.  He was mesmerized by the beauty, durability and non-corrosion traits of it so he thought he could do something with it.  He was originally thinking about creating products for the airplane industry but the company’s workings with this steel led to his contribution to the history of stainless steel trains.

The Michelin Company knew that Budd was manufacturing with this steel and asked his company to produce a lightweight rail car that would run on Michelin’s tires.  It would offer the railroad business a safe, quiet, fast ride on the track while increasing profits for all parties involved.  As a result, in 1932 a lightweight, stainless steel rail car named Lafayette was designed, built and sent to France.  It was able to hold 32 passengers.  This was the spark of many projects to come including a series of orders for the Reading Company, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Texas-Pacific Railroad.

Why Stainless Steel Works for Indoor Swimming Pools

Indoor swimming pools have a wide array of characteristics to choose from.  Just today I took a tour of two different health fitness clubs with two very different indoor pools.  The first one was intended for leisurely family fun while the other was aligned with swimming lanes for serious, get-in-shape members.  One had colorful, posh lights shining upon the water replicating a high-end resort while the family fun one had a no fuss feel.  This is the same with these types of pools throughout the private and public sector.  There are water parks with indoor wave pools, indoor water slides and light fixtures distinct to a facility proving you can find options suitable to any taste.  But one aspect of these indoor pools that was common amongst the two visited facilities (and across the board regardless of the locale) is the room/air temperature.

The air temperature around this type of pool is usually hot, humid and kept that way on purpose to maintain a high level of chemical sanitation.  These chemicals are mainly chlorine- based and placed in around the pool area, the sauna sections, showers, change rooms, etc…  This is why when building an indoor aquatic facility stainless steel is the best option.  Let me explain.

When manufacturing a swimming facility it is important to remember that water will be mixed with chemicals, humidity and high temperatures.  Under such circumstances, certain materials crack and corrode.  High temperatures escalate the corrosion process in several metals and humid droplets of water you find in these areas generate cracks within these metals.  Additionally, the cleaning and maintenance chemicals used alter the state of materials that come into contact with the water, chemicals and humidity; on the other hand, stainless steel remains intact.

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, impervious to cracking and remains intact when chemicals react to the metal.   It is easy to clean, stays hygienically sound and does not rust.
