Why a Water Waste Treatment Plant Uses Stainless Steel

Waste water treatment plants choose stainless steel for its durable, corrosion-resistance and low cost characteristics.

When building, managing and running a water waste treatment plant, there are many things to consider.  Think about what materials to use for the aeration pipes, valves, tanks and transfer pipes.  Consider what material selection for the machinery is corrosive-resistant without adding toxic chemicals to the water.  Factor in what metal fulfills all of these standards including keeping the maintenance and repair costs low compared to other materials.  The answer is stainless steel.

Steel grades 304 and 316 are the two most commonly used grades for waste water treatment processes and water filtering systems.  Other materials were considered in the past but they do not outshine the advantages found in this metal.  For instance, HDPE is a known substance found in plastics throughout the US.  It carries a chemical resistance quality similar to that of steel.  However, it decomposes when exposed to light.  This is a difficult and pricey problem to face in the waste and water treatment industries.

Along with the athletes, patrons, sporting events and competition defining the London Olympics 2012, there comes another aspect to the global event.  Medical testing technicians, equipment and entire research labs coincide with the Olympic Games to ensure fair play practices.  So what does this mean to the stainless steel industry and why should you care?  Well, when seeing descriptions and videos of the testing centers, the use of stainless steel is apparent.  It is used in every aspect of the testing for the same reasons hospitals and medical centers use it on a regular basis too.  Thus, today I am going to share with you two ways the medical industry works with this durable, corrosion resistant metal.

Surgical and Orthopedic Equipment

The Relationship Between Stainless Steel and Swimming Pools

Summer time means temperatures are rising, kids are out of school, backyard cookouts are planned and hopefully, somewhere in this summer picturesque scene, a pool is involved.  It is way too hot not to involve endless swimming days into the mix.  With that said, today I am going to focus on pools and the relationship pool design has with stainless steel.

Stainless steel is incorporated into pool design in different ways.  Consider what you need the steel for and where it will be used before diving into purchasing steel for this project.  Think about if you are going to need the steel item to be fully submerged or saturated all the time.  For instance, pool ladders and diving board structures fall into this category.  Alternatively, do you need to design areas that shall only get splashed instead, such as changing rooms, bathrooms and/or seating areas?

Grades 304 and 316 are commonly used for all of the above locations.  For the more drenched areas, choose type 316.  Its crevice corrosion resistance makes it an ideal choice.  Of course,  ask a professional that specializes in steel to discover what your options are and which works best to meet your needs.

Emirates Air Line for London Olympics 2012 Features Steel

The most expensive cable car system in the world is built for the London Olympics 2012.

The London Olympics 2012 is expected to bring in 10,500 athletes, 8.8 million sold tickets, 37,000 accredited and non-accredited media and all this does not even include the Paralympic Games.  Out of these numbers, an obvious, large dilemma amongst the Olympics Committee started to form.  How is London going to transport spectators back and forth between specific London Olympics and Paralympics’ arenas?  The solution would not be cheap or easy but it had to be done.  Vehicles are not permitted to pass between locations unless they are part of a pre-approved VIP group so what about the rest of the masses?  You do have the underground transportation but it would not be enough.  Thus, the creation of the Emirates Air Line was born.

The Emirates Air Line is the world’s most expensive cable car system spanning across the Thames River in the Eastern part of the city.  The cable system has two towers weighing over several hundred tons each.  For instance, the south tower alone, which is the larger of the two, is made up of 6,500 steel pieces and it weighs approximately 750 tons.

The cable cars can transport around 2,500 people every hour.  Each cable car departs every 30 seconds.  This saves negative impact on pollution and decreases traffic issues from developing further.  To put it into perspective, Emirates Air Line cable system is the equivalent to 30 buses.

Emirates Air Line paid $57 million in sponsorship money to fund the project.  The price for the transport has not been fully decided yet.  City officials estimate the cost of a fare will equal the same amount as a boat ride fare, $8.00.

The Radisson Blu in Stockholm is the result of using stainless steel to highlight the environment.
